Millstone River

View Millstone Rive Manville April 2nd 2011 in a larger map

Today I paddled up the Millstone from Manville.
There is a good clean launch and accessible boat ramp

The scenery was a mix of riverside backyards to sections of undeveloped land.

I had been that way before, but it was one of my earliest paddles in Jersey. In fact the first time I went out there, I totally missed seeing the canal, and launched on the Millstone, thinking it was the canal. It was not until I passed some canoeists who said, " We usually only see kayakers on the canal" that I realized I was in fact not on the canal. I didn't even know the Millstone River was there. In fact, it runs parallel to the canal, often coming almost directly adjacent to it.
The river  a more interesting paddle than the canal, simply because it is a river, and it has the associated rivery banks as opposed to the clean cut banks of the canal.

It was a cold, but fine day. There was some light cloud cover, but the sun often came out to brighten up the day. Temperatures were around the 3-6 C, depending on wind gusts . Winds were generally light, but it picked up a little later in the day.
The beauty of the two way paddle is that by starting the paddle upstream, one gets to take it very easy on the return journey, letting the current do most of the work...which I did.

It was a nice, easy, flatwater paddle.

  2. Hey, Sorry, I only just saw the comment. I basically only do day trips, I save the overnight trips for the summer, and then we go way out west- Rockies usually. That said I know that the Delaware Raritan Canal is 70 miles long, and there is at least one camp ground there somewhere .
    Check out the link http://www.dandrcanal.com/gen_info.html

There are a few locks, but they're easy enough to get around.
This site is pretty good too, so you might find something there.

    1. Hi Coop,
I just came across your images of the Millstone. Can you tell me where the launch site (image w/ pick-up truck is)
I've launched at the Millstone Aquaduct near the southern end of Lake Carnegie. The Millstone gets rather interesting after it passes under route 1. Lots of twists and turns. Eventually passing under a concrete RR bridge in Plainsboro.( you can see this area on google maps). I'm also a winter kayaker and look forward to paddling the section of the Millstone you described. Thanks for sharing that info.

  3. Got the Canoe on the roof now. Heading out tomorrow morning for just this spot. Which way to start north or south? I was going to head north to the dam, then turn around and head south to the BlackwaterMills bridge and back again. I dont do portages if I can help it. My Grumman is like 70 lbs. Might even drop a line in the water for a bit.
